FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tappahannock (May 8, 2009) Local residents have a convenient opportunity to donate blood on Wednesday, May 20 in the St. Margaret’s School Ball Memorial Gymnasium from 2 – 7 p.m. St. Margaret’s community service club, Basic Needs, is once again organizing a community blood drive. This marks the tenth year that the school has worked with the American Red Cross to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for area hospitals. This year, eligible 16-year-olds may also give blood with a signed American Red Cross parental consent form.

"We're excited to host the blood drive again this year,” said Basic Needs Chair Meghan Cooke of Tappahannock. “The American Red Cross has become a part of our SMS family, and it's an honor to be able to contribute to the cause."

The Red Cross advises donors to get plenty of sleep the night before their donation, have a healthy breakfast or lunch, and drink plenty of fluids such as water, milk or juice. Donors must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds in order to donate. A photo ID or blood donor card is also required. For more facts about donor eligibility and the blood donation process, visit www.weneedblood.org   For questions about the St. Margaret’s blood drive contact ViAnn Farmer at (804) 443-3357.
