Seven St. Margaret’s students were recently recognized by the Essex County Women’s Club for their winning entries in a local art and poetry contest.
Amelia Chen ’10 of Taipei, Taiwan, received the best in show award for her black and white pencil drawing. She also took home two first place awards, one for an acrylic painting and one for the pencil drawing. Clarice Medrano ’09 of Alexandria placed third in acrylic painting while Abigail Odell ’10 of Tappahannock placed first in mixed media.
“This contest is a way to bring arts awareness to the community,” said Judy Wessells, co-chair of the Essex County Woman’s Club art committee. “We want to encourage and acknowledge kids with budding talent.”

In the poetry contest, Emily Lindsey ’12 of Clifton placed second for “Salvation” in the category for grades 7-9. For grades 10-12, Alex Coleman ’10 of Tappahannock placed first for “My Previous Life” and Rebecca Parker ’11 of Walkerton placed second for “The Voice of a Snowflake.” Lizzy Cordes ’09 of New Orleans, La., received an honorable mention for “My Friend Katrina.”
Students who placed first in art will now compete in a district contest while first place poetry winners will go on to a national competition. The contest is sponsored by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. This year, the Essex County Woman’s Club received more than 100 entries from local students in grades K-12. Entries are judged by independent judges.
