St. Margaret’s School students have won academic awards and special prizes that make them eligible for college scholarship consideration if they apply to and are accepted by the sponsoring institutions. The awards were presented at the school’s year-end Academic Awards Banquet on Friday, May 30.
Corbin Brooks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Brooks of Millers Tavern won the Wofford College Award presented to students in the top 10 percent of their class who have scored at least 1100 on the SAT and possess commendable character, scholarship, leadership, and service to others. She was also this year’s recipient of the William & Mary Leadership Award which is given to the junior who best exemplifies inspirational leadership, outstanding scholarship, and unwavering loyalty to her school.
Brooks is a member of the National Honor Society and received awards for her outstanding work in Advanced Placement Biology and academic recognition for her work in Honors English and Fashion Design. She will head the St. Margaret’s School Honor Council for the 2008-09 school year.
Junior Anna-Beth Lawler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Lawler of Sandy Point, received the Jefferson Book Award. The Richmond chapter of the University of Virginia Alumni Association makes this award to a well-rounded junior who best represents the Jeffersonian ideal, including scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. Also a member of the National Honor Society, Lawler received academic recognition for her work in Current Events. She will be the school’s student body president next year.
Meghan Cooke, daughter of Ms. Teresa Ballard and Mr. Keith Cooke of Tappahannock received the Presbyterian College Fellows Award. She also received academic recognition for her work in Spanish IV and Art History and for her outstanding achievement in British Literature and Composition. Cooke was also inducted into the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society and will be co-editor of the 2009 yearbook and Tides, the school’s literary magazine.
The Rensselaer Medal for achievement in mathematics and science was presented to boarding student Joan Ge of Shanghai, China. Ge also received recognition for her outstanding achievement in Biology.

One of the evening’s highlights was the induction of new members into the St. Margaret’s School chapter of the National Honor Society. New inductees included Tappahannock residents Betsy Joslyn, who was also recognized for her work in World History II and Latin IV; Rebecca McKinley, who also received recognition for her outstanding work in Spanish III; and Abby Odell, who earned academic recognition for her work in French III and Health. Hannah Newman of Lancaster was also tapped for membership in addition to being recognized for her outstanding work in American Literature and Composition, French II, Old Testament, and Painting. Boarding students Sujin An, Amelia Chen, Martha Reynolds, Michka Sharpe, and Linh Tran were also inducted into the National Honor Society.
The English Department inducted four students into the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society for their contributions to the yearbook and Tides. In addition to Cooke, boarders Stephanie Hanson, Martha Reynolds, and Mary Catherine Sargeant were inducted.
During the evening, each academic department presented awards for outstanding achievement or academic recognition to as many as two students in each of the school’s courses. Local students recognized included: Alex Coleman of Tappahannock, Black & White Photography; Danielle Creel of Dunnsville, U.S. History; Sarah Gibson of Montross, Latin II and Chemistry in the Community; Scarlett Gregory of King William, Math Analysis and Painting; Martha Joslyn of Tappahannock, Advanced Art and Math Analysis; Maggie Keilhauer of Whitestone, Geography; Cristina Molinares of Montross, Science; Rebecca Parker of Walkerton, Health; Ellie Shields of Kinsale, History, Science, English, and Health; and Holly Wever-Christian of Walkerton, Latin I.
Finally, in addition to these winners, the ceremonies recognized graduating students who have earned Presidential Educational Awards. Boarders Katherine Burnett, Stephanie Hanson, Hailey Jung, Hannah Kessler and Martha Reynolds were gold seal winners, having achieved a grade point average of 90 or above and scoring at or above the 85th percentile on a standardized academic test.
Silver seal winners who achieved a grade point average of 90 or above or scored at or above the 85th percentile on a standardized academic test included boarding students Ji Ye Kim, Young Eun Lee, Mary Catherine Sargeant, and Michka Sharpe.
