River Day Program - Photo Galleries
8th grade
The 8th graders depart Thursday afternoon for an overnight trip to the headwaters of the Rappahannock in the Shenandoah National Park. They spend the night on the at Big Meadows Campground. On Friday, the class hikes to Dark Hollow Falls, picnic on trail, stop in Fredericksburg for ice cream, and arrive on campus for dinner.

9th grade
9th graders explore the river just above the fall line north of Fredericksburg. Camp overnight at Richardsville. They are tubing on the river at Kelly's Ford, and lunch on the river.

10th grade
Sophomores use SMS as a base to explore the River by cruising on the Captain Thomas, canoeing and kayaking in Hoskins Creek, seining in different parts of the river, and using the Rappahannock for fun and recreation in the afternoon.

11th grade
Juniors spend River Days in the Chesapeake Bay with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at Isabel Island. They participate in a variety of activities including trawling, marsh mucking, canoeing, planting trees, dredging for oysters, and learn about environmental restoration in the Chesapeake Bay.

12th grade
Seniors spend the day where the river and bay meet the ocean. They kayak with the dolphins, through Kayak Nature Tours, in the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach.
